What We Do
Correctional Mental Health
Our Approach
Our team of psychosocial services professionals, which includes psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and mental health specialists, provide individual and group counseling, and treatment to address the needs, problems, and behavioral conditions of JTDC residents.
IRC’s approach is multi-disciplinary, team-driven, and customized to the needs of the individual. To ensure continuity of care, the Office of the Transitional Administrator (OTA) organized the JTDC facility into smaller “household centers.” Having smaller clusters of centers, with a core group of IRC professionals in each, gives greater stability to residents, improves communication, and makes our work more efficient.
Regular multi-disciplinary team meetings take place every week to discuss treatment planning and coordination of care. In addition, we want our professionals to take the initiative to develop, incorporate, and test innovative methods in their treatment strategies. We encourage our professionals to spend a portion of their time pursuing independent projects that they believe will improve mental health care services. By supporting this kind of entrepreneurial problem solving, we believe the IRC can continue its tradition of innovation and develop new models for the mental health profession.

All youths receive an initial health screening upon admission to the JTDC, and within 24 hours receive a psychological assessment. Psychosocial services for youths can include crisis intervention, coping and behavioral skills development, group and individual counseling, and coordination of care involving community resources, other agencies, and aftercare programs. Professionals in the psychosocial services team work closely with our psychiatric staff in coordinating services and care during a youth’s stay at JTDC.
